I find that when painting quickly the stronger colours that catch my eye tend to dominate the painting. The quieter colours usually creep in after some thought, hence the colours in this painting are possibly brighter than in reality. It is an old family heirloom belonging to a friend who very kindly allowed Hils and I to borrow it. This is a winter painting which, I think, shows in the cool pallet. There are tiny spots of heat, indicated with red and ochre, within the jug as it reflects the warmth of the studio lights to the left of the painting. Framed oil on canvas. This painting reveals my personal feelings about our planet and all that reside on it. I see Mother Nature as my God and try to respect all living creatures no matter how insignificant they may seem. I painted the light outside with a much brighter tone. Over several weeks this gradually changed to the colour and tone that you see now. Although this may not be a true representation of the view it works in the painting allowing the red, yellow and blue to glow. There are times when the painting takes over from the observed view to make the final piece 'work'. Framed oil panel. I knew that I wanted to do a still and quiet painting, but wasn't sure what objects to use. The complete process took approximately two months. The jar is a rich creamy yellow with a hard glossy shine to it. But, the thing that caught my eye, with the view of painting it, were the sinister little faces moulded onto the sides of the jar. The first inspiration relates to the size and scale of the piece. When 'we' are taught drawing/art at school there is much emphasis placed on composition, that is, where we choose to place objects within the space provided.
