However, within the darkness we can see the brightness of the fruit echoed in the reflections of the silver. This painting was going well but I was struggling with a silver jug which was in the foreground. I painted it over and over again but finally decided that the composition worked better without it! This single pear placed on a walnut table is full of colour and atmosphere. Fruit rarely gets eaten in my house - it is usually part of a composition and tends to slowly decompose! Thus, the object itself evolves and offers yet another scenario. Oil on card. Because they don't last long indoors I had to complete this painting promptly which imbues the painting with an immediacy and freshness. Oil on panel. I feel that this imbues the painting with a freshness and vitality. It seems to me that the tulips are cast adrift in a tempestuous seascape full of movement and atmosphere. Oil on card. I broke off some of the flowers while potting it up and resolved to paint them. This is a fairly simple composition with a white cotton curtain, white wall and ledge and a lovely little bottle but I feel it has atmosphere and is quite eye-catching. Oil on panel. I had laboured over the silver jug and was beginning to hate it! As a respite, I set up another still life and resolved to paint quickly and decisively. I believe that this painting works so well in part because of the difficulties I had with the previous painting but also since the jug plays a pivotal role in this composition. Although this painting is much more subdued and calmer than its predecessor I feel that it has the same intensity and harmony. Oil on panel. It is almost as if the flowers specified the manner in which they were to be painted. They seem to be almost three dimensional perhaps because the paintwork is textured and energetic and vibrant background pushes the flowers forward towards the viewer. Oil on board. This work was painted underneath an apple tree in Charlotte's garden. .It had been some time since it had rained and the grass was parched and dry. The studio stands in the shelter of a large clump of trees that appear even darker against the startlingly blue sky. Oil on board. Painted in my old studio, the combination of window and ledge, the square glass vase and their reflection provide an angularity and tension within the tranquillity of this floral composition. This piece of taffeta is full of colour and texture, difficult to paint but worth the effort. The figurine, apart from added interest, also balances this piece of work. Oil on muslin on panel. Manor Farm is a wonderful old Suffolk farm, fairly tumbledown but full of atmosphere and character. Luckily, the weather conditions were similar on each visit: hot, dry and bright. The darkness of the cowshed relieves the stark bleached wooden supports that barely support the roof. Oil on muslin on panel.
